Thank you Kelly and The Awake Network. I am really interested in the reference you make towards the end of the session where you link genetic and temperament variants to your own experience and infering that some people are more likely to benefit from movement. This is so exciting! especially for those that do exercise but don’t realize the positive impact of the exercise/movement activities are having on both their mental and physical health. Thank you, Raelene
You said tai chi and some other things was a flow exercise.. what do you mean by flow?
This was Quite a new perspective on mindfulness and movement. I am paralysed from the neck down and have been practising meditation Both before I was paralysed and Still practising After being paralysed. I can understand how this perspective on mindfulness and movement can apply to someone who has functionality in the body. Naturally, as a paralysed person I am gonna ask this question how can such a perspective on mindfulness movement relate to someone affected by a total paralysis of the body. Would love to hear your thoughts about this. Thanks, Clayton
Thank you for this beautiful talk and interview! So grateful for the content! Will it stay in the library?
Hi Alexandra,
It will stay freely available on this page.
Feel free to share it with others 🙂
Best,
Jessie @ The Awake Network
Thank you so much! I’ve been practicing Yoga for almost 40 yrs and it has made all the difference in the world. I’m 70 now and hope to get certified so that I can teach Qi Gong to senior citizens. I figure that will get me through the next couple of decades at least……lol
Excellent video.
can’t comment right now-going out for a run….
Unfortunately I could not come live with Kelly Mcgonigal because of time zone. But want to know is there any next webinar of Kelly Mcgonigal, I will try my best to be the part of that??
Thank you for validating the need for movement! I am too, a person that seeks movement for mental health support.
Excellent talk and thanks for sharing.
Inspiring, information, motivating, affirming! Thank you!!
Dear Dr. Kelly and Kaleigh,
Wow. That really inspired me!
It was wonderful to hear so many actual examples shared. There were a few I wrote down and I’m eager to begin.
Much gratitude to you both.
Can I have permission to share the recording of this presentation with my Saybrook University students in the Mind-Body-Spirit Therapies and Practices class? We have a module on movement that I think this work would support beautifully, and inform our students about your new book.
SO AMAZING! Thank you Kelly!!
Thank you, Kelly and Awake! That was fabulous!! I enjoyed learning the science behind it all and am motivated to up my yoga practice and dance again!
Thank you Kelly, I have heard you speak many times. Please call me to discuss spending a day with a group of researchers, learners and professors who would like to learn from you. My cell number is 707-246-9797. Or email me at jdkresge@gmail.com with contact information for an opportunity for us to speak together. Thank you. Jennifer Kresge
Great session! I am all in. At 64 this summer, I’m signed up for the one day bike ride Ride Across Wisconsin, just a mere 225 mile jaunt. I find the experience of long bike rides and downhill skiing to trigger all the feel good brain chemistry cocktail that you describe. Thanks for your work!
Thank you. Great session with Kelly!
Thanks Kelly, Amazing as always!
Thank you!!!!
Running the Ragnar next summer and was looking for motivation – just found it on this call!
With much gratitude,
so inspiring, thanks so much!
Mr. Rogers basically did a form of loving kindness when swimming. He would say the names of all the people who he was holding compassion for as he swam laps, which he did every day.
Yes, what you said made me think that more accessible Ropes Courses would be great! In regards to developing giving and receiving compassion and support!
I love the idea of community for movement. But when you are trying to heal, running alone lets me take out bits of my pain. Look at it. Put it away. Solo feels right a lot of the time. I like the hurt of the physical to heal the mental. Also! Hi Kelly. You are amazing!
I am doing Yoga with Adriene, 30 days of HOME, which is an online youtube channel program with an online Kula for the community. Doing this type of at-home yoga for the last 5 months, I am finding that an online yoga class, where you know that many others are practicing with you at the same time, still has an extremely positive benefit and connection with others. It would be really interesting for a study to examine how technology (Online fitness programs) affects an individual’s sense of interdependence, support, equanimity, and community.
I’d be interested in this also! I enjoy Yoga with Adriene as well as Zumba and Body Groove online and was curious about the online community.
Wonderful talk, absolutely loved it.
Can you talk more about how music works in the brain to bring joy through movement
is it absolutely necessary to move with other people? I am a registered yoga teacher and nurse. I feel now that exercise in solo is more beneficial because i’ve been to soooo many group yoga classes where equanimity isn’t felt in the room with strangers.
This is my passion as well and all of Kelly’s books have had a huge impact on my life.
My approach is the 10th repetition of an exercise should be EASIER than the 1st. If not, something needs to shift. (Easier doesn’t necessarily mean less challenging or simple!)
One needs to find their own challenges.
This all falls under the umbrella of Somatic Psychotherapy as well. IMHO
Yess!!! So powerful! Putting to words so many things I know and feel to be true. Love it!
How can we support you in sharing this message?
I find a lot of people have jumped on the bandwagon of walking WITH A DEVICE, myself included. Do you have any thoughts on the downside of becoming overly attached to our shows, number of steps, our HRV, VO2max, etc.
Hi, I’m Jennifer from Napa Valley, California. I have emailed you a couple of times to speak with you about being a presenter/instructor for a neuroscience research group I am involved with, the Brainy Bunch. Can you please share with me a way to have a conversation about this with you?
How does competitive movement like playing sports fit into all of this? It seems like it might be very valuable for developing benefits from exercise, but not always connections. Although competitors also form strong connections.
Thank you so much,
What exercise can I do when I have majorly compromised adrenals and I want to exercise without always going to adrenal energy?
Choosing a Movement practice with adrenal support is definitely possible! I love to talk to about this!
Hi my name is Joi and I’m in Indianapolis. Love your work Dr McGonigal! I have your other books and plan to get this one too!
Hi I’m Brooke from Ohio!
I combine mantra, yoga poses, walks and mindfulness all in one, what your thoughts on that.
Hello! I’m excited for this. How would you suggest incorporating movement in a weekly mindfulness session for teachers? Also teenagers? Thank you!
How can you motivate people to move when they refuse or do not feel it will help?
Hi!! So excited to be here! Love your work : )
How would you encourage and facilitate movement among an elder population who use wheelchairs for mobility?

It’s also live on youtube – just look up Awake Network on youtube. I’m also in Canada! 🙂
What do you think are the best ways to incorporate movement in the classroom?
Hey there!
What can be. An initial powerful start for someone who is disconnected to his/her body but willing to try some bodywork.
I mean, people like most of us (back then or current) stucked in the mind and disconnected from the body.
Do you suggest any strong kickstarter action or affirmation to those people?
Do you understand how shared movement can bring the others together? The conversation between the lead and the follower in Argentinian Tango, the invitation, and response in the dance where the 2 become 1 is perhaps a great definition of joyous union.
Hello Dr. Mcgonigal,
Could you please explain or do you have empiric studies about how movement cant help those suffering from anxiety disorders, in particular from OCD, thank you.
Hello Dr. Kelly McGonigal,
I write you from Chennai, India. I have enjoyed watching your TED talk. I have one question for you. After reaching 50 years of human life what will help a person to lead an happy life?
Some peoples may say that money will help them to have an happy life,
And some peoples may say health will be the main reason,
But some others will say devotional activities keeps them happy.
In this which the human mind will choose and what will be correct to have an happy life?
Thank you.
Hello Dr. McColigan
I write you from Barcelona, Spain. Just a little question for you. As a psychologist, do you think movement can be a good prescription for people with psychological desorders? Is there any empiric study about how movement cant help in those cases? Do you have significant results with your own clients? For me to practice movement could be a great help but I do not have evidences. Thank you so much!
Hi,
I am excited to read your book and really enjoyed your TEDtalk. How can I create a class that focuses on helping people really embrace a love for movement? I don’t want to offer choreography but something that offers a deeper connection to music, self, and community. How can I lead people in order for them to experience this JOY of movement for themselves? I am a dance teacher but want to move more into offering freeform dance as a way of expression for students. thank you.
Can you address movement for people with chronic pain?
Hello Dr Mcgonigal
How can one get rid of fear of traveling by aeroplanes ?
Hi Dr. McGonigal,
I recently attended a yoga session that included a bit of energy-moving tai chi and a fast-breathing trauma release exercise that was very powerful. Many of us women were in tears by the end. Can you explain how trauma informed yoga works, which uses movement and breath to release emotion?
Thank you,
Molly
How can I share my understanding of the way movement increases mental and physical wellness to a client who is convinced she has to be better to exercise? (by being better she means to feel physically stronger, to be managing life’s challenges more effectively, and to be staying on top of her diabetic symptoms more faithfully)
